Abraham R. Crislip
1826–1903
Abraham R. Crislip, born 8 Jan 1825, Virginia; died 4 June 1903, Johnson. “Resides in Kentucky and is a minister of the Methodist Episcopal denomination.” The Christlieb Family, B.F. Christlieb, p. 38. In 1890, Abraham married, 1st, Martha Virginia McGinnis; married, 2nd, Kathryn, born February 1843. Kathryn’s maiden name is unknown. No issue.
“Abraham R. Crislip reportedly resided at George’s Creek, a little southeast of the center of Lawrence County, Kentucky, on the Big Sandy River, about 300 miles from Louisville.” “A Look at Kentucky Towns and Their Establishments 122 years ago.” “Kentucky Explorer,” Vol. 16, No. 7. December–January 2002—Kentucky’s 1879 State Gazetteer.
At the above time, George’s Creek was a settlement of 25 persons, of whom 12 were listed in the business directory. Abraham is listed as the Rev. Abraham R. Crislip, Methodist. According to family tradition, Abraham was buried in Johnson County in a little cemetery at Sitka (Rt. 201), approximately eight miles from Paintsville, Kentucky. Abraham Chrislip served as Chaplain in the Civil War, serving in the 13th West Virginia Infantry. He enlisted in the Union Army on 8 April 1865, and was discharged on June 22nd of the same year.
In October 1890, he applied for a Civil War pension declaring “permanent disability, not due to vicious habits, from old age and affliction [of the] right hip and limbs.” Abraham’s petition was denied. He applied again in 1892, only to be denied a second time. For whatever reason, Abraham never claimed his Union Service Medal which is inscribed, “Abraham R. Crislip, Chaplain, 13th Infantry.” More than 100 years after the Civil War ended, Abraham’s medal was conveyed to Don Crislip, a resident of Charleston, West Virginia.
