Ann Catherine Christlieb

1829–1908

Ann Catherine Christlieb (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Jacob Christlieb3) [997], born 9 December 1829, Mifflin Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; married, 18 February 1863 near Newville in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Samuel Baer/Bear. Ann Catharine was probably named after her great grandmother, Anna Catharina Engel/Bock Christlieb. Samuel Bear constructed his household furniture and as a coffin maker served his community as an undertaker. In the 1850s he operated a hardware business in Newville, Pennsylvania. Samuel Bear, born 3 April 1812, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, had six children by two previous marriages. He and Ann Catherine had three daughters and one son. The village of Bearsdale, Illinois, was named by Ann Catherine to honor the three Bear brothers who lived within a mile of each other in Hickory Point Township, northwest of Decatur. In 1863, Ann and her husband joined two of his brothers in Macon County, Illinois, who had previously located in that area. Ann Catherine Bear’s photo is shown below.

Samuel Bear died 25 February 1880 in Macon County, Illinois, and is buried in Boiling Springs Cemetery, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. Ann Catherine Christlieb Bear died 21 January 1908 in Macon County, Illinois, and is also buried in Boiling Springs Cemetery, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. She is buried near her son, Brice Jacob Bear, and his wife, Edith Good.
