George Christlieb Jr.

1806–1878


George Christlieb Jr., born 30 Sep 1806, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; died 3 Jan 1878, Lucas County, Ohio, buried in North Oregon Cemetery, Oregon, Lucas County, Ohio; married Barbara Clackner, born 24 Jan 1817, Ironville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; died 3 Jun 1897, Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio; burial in North Oregon Cemetery, Oregon, Lucas County, Ohio; in Stark County, Ohio. George Christlieb made an application for a marriage license for himself and “Barbary” Clackner in Summit County, Ohio, on 14 August 1841. At the time, George was 21 years old and “Barbary” was 18. Their marriage, which was solemnized by the German Reformed Minister, John W. Hamm of Manchester, took place on the following day. Summit County, Ohio Marriage Records, Volume A, Applications (1840-1849). The marriage was recorded at the Summit County Courthouse on August 18th. The 1850 census shows George and family residing in Wayne Township, Allen County, Indiana. In the record George, age 40, is listed as a fanning mill maker. Barbara, his wife, is age 32.

According to Benjamin Franklin Christlieb, George Christlieb “was a tollgate keeper on the Bluffton Plank road near Fort Wayne, Indiana, about 1855.” The 1860 census finds George Christlieb and family newly located in Archbold, German Township, Fulton County, Ohio. In this enumeration, George is listed as a merchant, age 52; Barbara is 38; daughter Mary E. is 14; Amanda J. is 10; Twins Annaliza and Lauretta are ages 6; and Frances M. is age 1. Daughters Anna E. and Barbara are absent in this census, indicating that they died between 1850 and 1860. Wendell F. Lauth, Bristolville, Ohio.
