Nathan Chrislip

1812–1894

Nathan Chrislip, born 26 July 1812, Harrison County, Virginia; died 7 February 1894, Malta, West Virginia; married, 15 January 1854, Elizabeth Jane Hart, born 1832, Beverly, Randolph County, Virginia; died 22 January 1909. Both are buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Barbour County, West Virginia.

Prior to his marriage, Nathan purchased, in September, 1836, 165 acres of land in Lewis County from Gideon Camden, Administrator of the Estate of George Jackson, deceased from the State of Ohio. Nathan purchased the 165 acres for $82.75, initially paying $27.58 with the agreement that two annual payments of the same amount would follow in 1837 and 1838. Nathan ultimately paid slightly less than 50 cents per acre for the land. The plat map of acreage shows that the 165 acres abutted 3 ½ acres already owned by Nathan and 52 acres to the south owned by Job Ward. Further south were two parcels of land owned by James Ward, James being the son of Job Ward and brother of Hannah, wife of William Chrislip. Lewis County Deed Book, pp. 412 - 413.


Nathan Chrislip's Land Purchase

According to an indenture dated 25 September 1847, Nathan Chrislip sold 282 acres of land in Barbour County to his father John Chrislip, who paid his 25-year-old son $248 “lawful money of Virginia.” Described as “situate on the First Big Run, a Branch of Buck Hannon River …,” the land was originally a part of 400 acres patented to one Israel Israel. A copy of the handwritten deed can be seen below. Notice Nathan’s signature and seal as it appears on the deed.
