Peregrine G. "Perry Green" Chrislip
1823–1898
Peregrine G. Chrislip, born 23 July 1823, in Harrison County, Virginia; died 5 June 1898, Braxton County, West Virginia; buried in Evans Cemetery, Heaters, West Virginia. Known as “Perry Green,” he married 1st, Elizabeth “Eliza” Marple, born 18 March 1825, Upshur County, Virginia; died 14 May 1855, Barbour County, Virginia; married 2nd, 27 December 1855 in Upshur County, Elizabeth’s cousin, Barbara Ann Marple, born 1 July 1836, Lewis County, Virginia; died 27 September 1913, daughter of Amos T. Marple and Jemima Cummings, Harrison County, West Virginia.
Shown here is Peregrine and Eliza’s marriage bond that was procured on 22 December 1842. The bond was co-signed by the bride’s father, J. D. Marple. Note Peregrine’s quaint signature.

Thirteen years after their marriage, Eliza died at age 29, following the birth of her fourth child. She was buried in the Crislip Cemetery on Brushy Fork at Peppertown, Barbour County, West Virginia. After Eliza’s death, Peregrine married 2nd, 27 December 1855, in Upshur County, Elizabeth’s cousin, Barbara Ann Marple, born 1 July 1836, Lewis County, Virginia; died 27 September 1913, daughter of Amos T. Marple and Jemima Cummings, Harrison County, West Virginia.
The 2005 publication, “Union and Confederate Soldiers and Sympathizers of Barbour County, West Virginia,” lists Peregrine and his cousin, Ervin G. Chrislip, as members of the Barbour Light Horse Company, under the command of Capt. William K. Jenkins. Colonel George Porterfield had been ordered by Richmond to gather together volunteer and militia companies, but when Porterfield’s little army was driven from Philippi, in 1861, he dismissed Jenkins’ entire company, because there were too many abolitionists in the outfit for his liking. Also enrolled in the Barbour Light Horse Company were Peregrine’s cousins, Squire Crouse, Charles S. Callihan, Salatial M. Callihan, and Joel Reger. Capt. William K. Jenkins was the second husband of Mary Jane Callihan.
Peregrine’s father-in-law, Amos T. Marple, and his brother-in-law, Minter F. Marple (who was married to Minerva Elizabeth Chrislip) both enlisted in Company H, 10th West Virginia Infantry to serve the Union cause. Peregrine Chrislip, also a Union sympathizer, would serve as a Delegate to the 1864 Union Party Convention at Grafton. While Peregrine and his in-laws, as well as his first-cousin, Squire Crouse, supported of the Union Cause, his Callihan cousins, Joel Reger, and William K. Jenkins would remain faithful to the Confederacy.
