Samuel Christlieb (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Jacob Christlieb3) [989], was born 10 October 1826. His baptismal certificate, a portion of which follows, shows that he was baptized by the Rev. Nickolas J. Stroh. The event would have taken place in Ziegler’s Church in Mifflin Township in Cumberland County.

Samuel Christlieb married, 1851 in Mifflin Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Matilda Hershey, born 1830, daughter of Joseph and Catharine Hershey of Mifflin Township.

The 1850 U.S. Census lists a brother Isaac and a sister Elizabeth Hershey as part of the family group. Matilda’s father, a farmer, was age 49 and her mother was age 46. Living next door was Ann Hershey, age 74, probably Matilda’s grandmother. The 1870 U.S. Census identifies Samuel and Matilda’s three children: Esemiah C., age 17; Ida M. age 14; and William A., age 11. The birth order and birth dates are incorrectly reported in B.F. Christlieb’s family history. William A. Christlieb (1859-1933) is the grandfather of John Watson Christlieb of Newville. Esemiah C. “Kate” Christlieb (1852-1894) married Henry J. Whistler/Whisler in 1882. Wendell F. Lauth.

The 1860 Federal Census shows Samuel Christlieb as Head of Household in Mifflin Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, having personal property valued at $1,000.

The 1880 Farm Census shows the following for Samuel: 100 acres improved tilled meadow or pasture; 60 acres woodland & forest; $2,000 farm value; $500 farming implements and machinery; $600 livestock; $50 cost of building & repairing fences; $150 farm wages; $600 value of farm production sold or consumed; 35 acres grass mown; 65 acres grass not mown; 30 tons hay; 4 bushels clover seed; 6 houses; 3 milch cows; 5 other cows; 3 calves dropped; 2 cattle purchased; 2 cows slaughtered; 1 cow died strayed stolen; 200 lbs. butter; 24 sheep; 8 sheep sold; 13 sheep fleeces; 70 lbs. fleece; 7 swine; 25 barnyard poultry; 200 eggs; 8 acres Indian corn; 120 bushels Indian corn; 9 acres oats; 120 bushel oats; 4 acres rye; 32 bushels rye; 19 acres wheat; 150 bushels wheat; 8 tons flax straw; ½ acre Irish potatoes; 20 bushels Irish potatoes; 2 acres apples; 25 bearing apple trees; 200 bushel apples; $50 value of orchard products sold or consumed; 9 cords wood cut; $9 value of wood products sold or consumed.

Dated 10 October 1826, this is Samuel Christlieb’s Certificate of Birth and Baptism, compliments of his descendant, John Watson Christlieb, Newville, Pennsylvania. A larger and more detailed copy can be seen in Appendix D, page 1309 of Ancestors and Descendants of Friedrich Carl and Anna Catharina Christlieb.

Historian Benjamin Franklin Christlieb wrote, “Samuel has served his fellow citizens in a number of local offices at different times, especially that of Justice of Peace. He is an energetic and reliable business man and is frequently entrusted with important business of a private character. He has always resided in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.” The Christlieb Family, p. 34.

Dating from the 1870s or 1880s time period, the following map of Mt. Hope District of Mifflin Township shows the area occupied by Solomon Christlieb, which had been formerly owned by his father, Carl Christlieb. The property, labeled S. Christlieb, appears below the “M” in Mt. Hope. John Lay’s farm is nearby, as are many properties belonging to Whislers. Ebenezer Church (formerly Ziegler’s Lutheran and Reform by Georg Bock and Carl Christlieb), which was moved from its former location, is close to the school, near Whiskey Run.

CHRISTLIEB

Samuel Christlieb of West Hill, departed this life on Thursday, Nov. 12, 1908 at the age of 82 years, one month and two days.

The deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of this region and was generally known as an upright, honorable and industrious citizen. He was a farmer, and resided in lower Mifflin Township the major part of his life. Several years ago he moved from Lower Mifflin township to West Hill. Mr. Christlieb served as Justice of Peace in Lower Mifflin for several terms.

Born early in the last century, the deceased lived to see the world change wonderfully. The geography he used in school is now obsolete; slavery in Russia, the United States and most all other places have been abolished; Japan has teamed forth as a new world; the Mission cause has assumed new life; the arts and sciences have been developed to an astonishing extent. Truly the active, thinking, religious world does move. This all during one man’s life.

The subject leaves one son, William of North High Street, and one daughter to mourn his departure. The daughter was with him to the end, being unmarried, and ever cheered him in his declining years.

The funeral took place on Saturday morning, the services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.J. Kerr of St. Paul Lutheran church. Interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
