Searight Christlieb Koutz

1838–1923

Searight Christlieb Koutz, born 6 March 1838, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; died 16 April 1923, St. Paul, Minnesota; married, 25 December 1860, Nancy Rodema Evans, daughter of Henry and Marilla Evans, born 13 September 1841; died 17 June 1919.

“Searight was the youngest of ten children born to John Jacob and Sarah Christlieb Koutz. The family moved near Lake Odessa, Michigan where he lived until into the 1880s. At that time the family moved to Hecla, South Dakota, and when the Sioux Indian reservation near Sisseton was opened for settlement several members of the family homesteaded there. In later years he moved to Alvin, Texas.”

“Searight Christlieb Koutz served in Company E-6, Regiment, Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. He entered the service on August 30, 1862 from Ionia, Michigan and was mustered out November 24, 1865 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He was a private until December 31, 1863; Corporal to June 30, 1864; Sergeant to October 31, 1864; and was Quartermaster Sergeant to the date of his discharge.”

“Nancy Evans Koutz died on June 17, 1919 in Alvin, Texas, and was buried there. Searight died on April 16, 1923 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was buried in Alvin, Texas. At one time my grandfather, Searight Christlieb Koutz, had a livery stable and feed store in Claremont, South Dakota. Later he owned and operated a store in Veblem, South Dakota. He did some farming after his move to Texas in the nineteen tens. After the death of my grandmother, he spent the rest of his life with his children in Kansas and Minnesota.” Ruth Koutz Baker, Neodesha, Kansas, June 1994.

  • Willie Arthur Koutz (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Sarah Christlieb3, Searight Christlieb Koutz4) [1010], born 14 September 1861, Muir, Michigan; died 18 October 1951 in Neodesha, Kansas; married, 27 December 1888, Idaho Montana Fuller, daughter of Thomas Baldwin and Catherine Dorinda (Ferster) Fuller. Idaho was the first white child born in Bannock City after it became a territory and before it became a state. She died 3 June 1958 in Neodesha, Kansas.

  • Emma Joan Koutz (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Sarah Christlieb3, Searight Christlieb Koutz4) [1015], born 26 March 1868 in Michigan; died 3 November 1921, Alvin, Texas; married 1st, 1884, Jerome Galusha; married 2nd, Edwin Price.

  • Custer James Koutz (Friedrich Carl Christlieb1, Carl Christlieb2, Sarah Christlieb3, Searight Christlieb Koutz4) [1017], born 4 July 1876, Michigan; died 14 March 1951, St. Paul, Minnesota; married 29 November 1900, Laura Sophie Brosto, born 3 April 1882; died 25 July 1974.
