Jacob Crislip Reed

1807–1880

Jacob Crislip Reed, born 14 March 1807, Harrison County, Virginia; died 14 February 1880, Washington Township, Keokuk County, Iowa. When his grandfather, Jacob Christlieb, made his will in 1821, he bequeathed $5.00 to Jacob. Jacob Crislip Reed married 1st, 14 August 1828, Champaign County, Ohio, Elizabeth Cameron, born Pennsylvania in March 1809; died 1835 in Union County, Ohio; daughter of Joseph Cameron and Ann Dorothea Peck; married 2nd, 9 March 1835, Union County, Ohio, Ann Shisler, born July 1817, Ross County, Ohio; died 30 May 1899, Springfield, Cedar County, Iowa; daughter of Henry Shisler. Union County, Ohio Marriage Index, Vol. 1, page 164, No.359.

Virgil K. Cameron wrote in his Cameron History that Jacob Reed was the first in his family to leave Harrison County, Virginia, for Champaign County, Ohio, about 1825. There he met Joseph Cameron and his sister, Elizabeth. Jacob returned to Virginia to bring his sister, Sarah, and brother, William, back to Ohio. Jacob and Sarah Reed married the Cameron siblings. Virgil K. Cameron, “Cameron History.”

Records reveal that a marriage license was issued on 9 August 1827 to Jacob Reed and Elizabeth Camron/Camrel, and that the marriage took place on 14 August 1827, by John Rathbone, who recorded it on 13 September 1827. Champaign County, Ohio, Probate Court Marriages, Book B, 1819-1829, page 293, No. 1596.

“In 1830, Jacob and Elizabeth moved from Harrison County, Virginia to Jackson Township in Union County, Ohio, between Essex and Richwood, where they lived amongst friendly Indians. Jacob eventually became a storekeeper in Essex. Elizabeth died ca. 1835, Jackson Twp., Union County, Ohio. Jacob married, 2nd, Anna Shissler. In the spring of 1851, Jacob moved his family to Mahaska County, Iowa. Jacob Crislip Reed died, 14 February 1880, Keokuk, Iowa.” History of Union County, Ohio, Volume II, p. 488.

“Jacob Reed was born in Harrison County, Virginia on March 14, 1807. He came to Champaign county, Ohio in 1825 and, August 14, 1828, married Elizabeth Cameron, who was born in Pennsylvania in March 1809. In the fall of 1829, he came to this township and built himself a cabin about one and one-half miles south of Essex (Union County) on what is now known as the W.W. Smith place. While thus engaged, he voted at the first election held in Jackson Township. Returning to Champaign County, he moved his family in the spring of 1830 to his new home and there engaged in the arduous labors of a pioneer. His wife died in 1835. After following farming for a short time, Mr. Reed became a storekeeper at Essex. He sold out his store, and in 1851, he immigrated to Mahaska County, Iowa, where he died in the spring of 1880.” History of Union County, Ohio, Volume II, p. 602.

Jacob Crislip Reed’s obituary reads as follows:

“Mr. Jacob C. Reed, son of Jesse and Christina [Crislip] Reed, who died at his residence near Springfield, February 14, 1880, was born in London County, Virginia, March 14 1807, being 72 years, 11 months old at his death. He possessed no other advantages for gaining an education than that furnished by a subscription school; and his father being a shoemaker and, he being the oldest son, the home cares deprived him of even this. But, with German blood from his mother for industry, and with what he would naturally fall heir to from the small amount of Irish blood that coursed through his father’s veins, and zeal of the sturdy Virginian, as we have seen, he was enable to meet the difficulties as a man prepared for the task.”

“When about 18 years of age, he moved from London County, Virginia to Harrison County, now in West Virginia, remaining there but a short time; he moved to Union County, Ohio, where, in his 21st year, August 12, 1827, he was married to Elizabeth Cameron. Here he commenced business, occasionally changing until he bore the name of farmer, merchant, and stockholder. During this time his continual searching of the scriptures for truth he found that the Christian denomination better represented his ideas of the Bible, and he joined them where he remained a zealous worker to the day of his death.”

“About seven years after he was first married; his three children were left without a mother, and our friend without a wife, until December 24, 1835, when he married Anna Shister/Shissler, being his second wife with whom he lived the remainder of his life.”

“In 1849, he found himself nearly bankrupt by giving his name as security with a friend, who became insolvent, and finding he had not the means to continue in business, he moved to the state of Iowa, arriving in Keokuk County in May 1850, where he preached his first sermon in the Gregory Schoolhouse in Washington Township. He built his first residence in the town of Springfield.”

“As he was among the early settlers who saw the necessity of a doctor, he took up the study of medicine and for several years bore the title of Doctor. During the last 29 years of his life, he lived in and about the town of Springfield, where his occupation varied about the same as in Ohio, with the exception of the practice of medicine.”

“Mr. Jacob Reed was a thorough Christian worker. He never bothered himself with politics, considering it was not intended for a minister of the gospel. In and about Springfield, his divine presence became known by his appearance at the pulpit, and his daily walk and godly conversation. By his benignant hand and liberal generosity the greater part of the church at Springfield was built.”

“He was a man whose pity was easily aroused by the cry of the poor. Tears of pity—dewdrops of the soul—would gather in his eyes and gush impetuously down his cheek whenever he looked upon the suffering. Often while in the mercantile business, he had given articles of food and clothing to the poor, of whom he never expected a cent in return.”

“He had often taken part in Bible discussions with persons of other denominations. His religious valor was not ordinary, for he would never yield a point without being thoroughly convinced and consideration on his part.”

“He was taken sick nearly two years previous to his death, and the counsel of the most skilled physicians was baffled; and sinking from low to lower still, and during the time he was only once seen on the streets of Springfield. The night before he died, he asked for bread and wine to take the sacrament after which he attempted to sing and pray. During his last hours he sang or tried to sing: ‘I will praise Him while I have breath, and I will praise Him after death’ and ‘How Firm A Foundation’; and the last was ‘Come Thou Font of Every Blessing’ and died ten minutes past 11:00 a.m. he leaves a widow and eight children to survive him, besides a score of friends to mourn their loss. The funeral services were held at his dwelling and were largely attended by 62 teams besides a large number of horseback men.”

“The sermon was preached by Rev. Snyder of Springfield. For the benefit of his many friends, his coffin was opened at the grave. But the disease had taken away the resemblance of the man while in his life—so many of his friends could scarcely recognize him. But now he is gone, the good, the brave and we have followed him to the last resting place; he still exists; the sun of his existence has set beyond the western hills, but the trail of light he leaves behind will guide the pilgrim to his distant home.” Obituary by H.N. Roinson: Preserved by Nellie Mae Garrett.
